What Are Our Readers Saying

The incredibly powerful and inspirational "A Mother's Journey" by Lisa Brodeur impacted me on so many levels. It's emotionally honest and brave storytelling and inspires us here at In One Instant to strive even harder to show teens that the choices we all make every day really DO make a difference in the lives of others. We will recommend this book to every parent, teacher and administrator who takes part in our program. It will undoubtedly move them to make choices against their own distracted and impaired driving and to work with their children to do the same. "A Mother's Journey" is deeply touching and will save lives.

"A Mother's Journey has been implemented into the Grade 10 Health curriculum at Shepherd Hill Regional High School. This book is a vital tool that helps students relate to the fact that the decisions they make either positive or negative influences the lives of others. The Brodeur family has taken a tragic situation and turned it into one of the most powerful awareness programs I have ever seen. A Mothers Journey has given students insight regarding life altering situations thus contributing to providing them with the courage and determination to go make good choices in the future.”

- Ashley Gustafson, former Wellness Coordinator, Department Coordinator/Health/FSC, Shepherd Hill Regional High School

"A Mother's Journey Through Faith, Hope and Courage chronicles an amazing story of tragedy and hardship. Lisa Brodeur and her family have gone through a living hell only to endure and become remarkable contributors to our society. The book is a "Must read" for everyone and should be included in the Massachusetts secondary curriculum as well as the Commonwealth’s judicial system. Lisa is driven to prevent future tragic stories through education and help those individuals who have become part of the criminal justice system."

Lisa’s daughter Katie shared the story of the tragedy she had witnessed as a child in my class. After I was able to meet the Brodeur family it was clear that Lisa is the foundation of the strength, kindness, authenticity and positive attitude that her children all hold in their hearts. Lisa is a woman who is dedicated to raising awareness and is the ultimate rock that has a positive ripple effect on the lives of so many including mine. She is passionate about helping others and encouraging them to make good choices.

Lisa also impacts a variety of audiences through her powerful presentations. Throughout the 12 years when I was the wellness coordinator and a health educator at Shepherd Hill Regional High School I hired Lisa over three times to share her story. I also implemented Lisa’s book “A Mother’s Journey” into the health curriculum as a resource which had very good feedback from the staff and students.

Lisa is a force that has overcome the unimaginable and is the definition of resiliency as well as an example of what it means to be unstoppable.

As the advisor for SADD (Students for Destructive Decisions) at Northbridge High School, I highly recommend hosting Lisa Brodeur and her son Kyle for a poignant, heartfelt presentation on making good decisions. Lisa's family was devastated by a drunk driver in 1997 in an accident which took the life of her husband, severely injured her son (Kyle), broke her arm, broke her daughter's leg, and traumatized her other daughter.

Lisa spoke to our juniors, seniors, and any other prom guests--a few days prior to our prom this year. She spoke with Kyle at her side, wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life. He has undergone numerous surgeries to stay alive and communicates through a touchpad. Lisa's arm has never fully healed, and she endures pain every day. Lisa described the accident and its aftermath in vivid detail and then showed a video compilation, including images of her late husband and her children playing together, Kyle's struggles to stay alive and recover from his horrific injuries, and courtroom scenes of the callous drunk driver.

She even brought body casts, a wheelchair, and body jacket devices for volunteer students to wear during the presentation, just so the audience could see what her children have gone through. Her 3 year-old daughter was in a full body cast for two months, completely unable to move or even scratch an itch. Near the end of the presentation, she interviewed the volunteer students, and they expressed how awful it was being in the devices for just an hour.

I could see the looks on the faces of the students in the audience--along with some tears--and I couldn't hear anyone in the room but Lisa. Her message to make good decisions and prevent tragedies got through--loudly and clearly. I got further confirmation of this later in the school day, as students brought up her presentation. Many were appalled at the initial sentence of only 3 years in prison for the drunk driver, and many were moved by Kyle's strength and ability to make the most of life, despite his circumstances.

Lisa and Kyle's strength, positivity, and perseverance through the tragedy and its aftermath are an inspiration. Their presentation left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of our students.

A Mother's Journey

To whom it may concern,

Please accept this as formal documentation of my support for Lisa Brodeur to be a guest lecturer in your program. I first met Lisa at an Author’s Tea at Children’s Hospital in June of this year and was drawn to her touching, determined and inspirational words of wisdom.

In preparation for the class Nursing Care of Children, this summer our junior level Baccalaureate Nursing students at Curry College were asked to read “A Mother’s Journey through Faith, Hope and Courage”. As part of the preparation for our “Communicating with Children” lecture, students were asked to write a reflective essay, select a meaningful quote and create a unique question for Lisa and Kyle. On September 18th, Lisa and Kyle were invited to be our guest lecturers. Both the faculty and the students were impressed with the candid yet informal nature of the one hour presentation as Lisa retold the story of her husband’s death and the multiple injuries Kyle sustained in the car accident. Our students now have a profound understanding of family centered care and the need for strong communication skills.

The student feedback that we received from the presentation was particularly meaningful. One student reported “Reading the book and then having our class meet Lisa and Kyle made the book so much more moving. In her humorous way, Lisa and Kyle told us even more stories than were in the book! We learned the importance of honest and simple communication strategies that really work!”

Another student wrote “It was enlightening to read Lisa’s story and then to hear her say “We could have had it worse”. This was simply amazing and also very uplifting. It truly spoke to Lisa and Kyle’s strength. As a nursing student, it was so neat to see that although Kyle could not talk too much, he too had a sense of humor-remarkable to see after all he has been through!” One student concluded with “The presentation will motivate me to work even harder to reach my career goals to help patients like Kyle”.

In conclusion, I give my absolute highest recommendation of Lisa and Kyle Brodeur to you. They have already agreed to return next semester. They would make a welcome addition in any venue. Please feel free to contact me if you need any additional information.
Sincerely
